The lab pairs high-pressure, high-temperature experimental petrology equipment and cutting-edge analytical instruments with a world-class meteorite collection. Together these let us understand the conditions, formation, and evolution of the earliest Solar System objects.

The Earth Materials Characterization Center (EMC2) is a world-class microscopy and spectroscopy facility equipped with:

  • JEOL 8530F FEG Electron Probe Microanalyzer (EPMA).
  • Hitachi ultra-high-resolution Schottky scanning electron microscope (SEM) SU7000.
  • Raman spectrometer: Horiba-Jobin Yvon HR-800.
  • Infrared spectrometer (FTIR): Excalibur FTS 3000 with UMA 600 microscope.
  • X-ray powder diffractometer: Rigaku MiniFlex 600.

Peabody Museum

The Yale Peabody Museum's Division of Mineralogy & Meteoritics oversees a scientifically and historically important collection of nearly 23,000 meteorites, including 1,819 meteorite type specimens and 18,881 unclassified meteorites.

The Yale Metal Geochemistry and Geochronology Center is a world-class trace element facility equipped with:

  • One Thermo-Finnigan Multi-Collector ICP-MS (Neptune Plus).
  • One Thermo-Finnigan Element XR ICP-MS.
  • One Thermo Finnigan Triton Plus multi-collector TIMS.
  • One Thermo Scientific iCAP TQ ICP-MS.

The lab's workspace consists of two separate metal-free Picotrace class-ten clean rooms, which together contain 12 hoods and 12 dry-down stations.
